Why Dice Care Matters
In tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, dice are more than random number generators — they are relics of fate. Every roll shapes the story, every tumble carries destiny. Just as warriors sharpen their swords and wizards polish their staves, adventurers must care for their dice to keep them fair, balanced, and beautiful for years of campaigns.
1. Store Them Properly
Always keep your dice in a protective pouch, case, or dice box. This prevents scratches and chips that can occur when dice are tossed into backpacks or left loose on tables. For premium resin, metal, or gemstone dice, a padded case is essential.
2. Roll on a Safe Surface
Avoid rolling directly on hard surfaces like concrete, glass, or rough wood. Instead, use a dice tray or dice tower. Not only does this protect your dice, it also protects your table — and ensures rolls stay fair and contained.
3. Keep Them Clean
Over time, oils from your hands and dust from storage can dull the finish. Wipe your dice gently with a soft microfiber cloth. For resin and acrylic dice, a little mild soap and water can restore their shine (just be sure to dry them completely). Avoid harsh cleaners that may damage the material.
4. Mind the Temperature
Extreme heat or cold can warp or crack dice, especially resin and acrylic sets. Don’t leave them in a hot car, near a heater, or in direct sunlight for long periods. Treat them like the precious artifacts they are.
5. Rotate Your Favorites
If you always roll the same lucky d20, it may wear down unevenly over time. Rotate through your collection so no single die bears the brunt of every battle. It also gives you an excuse to show off your entire hoard!
